Are you a python or a giraffe?

You would think after over three years I would be used to lack of sleep but I have been struggling to adjust to 5am waking. It is so light that I have started to just accept it and get myself to bed earlier, but I can’t bring myself to go to bed at 9pm every night.

Apparently it is a myth anyway that we all need an eight hour stretch. Back in the day before electric lighting there was not much you could do when the sun went down, and so people just hit the sack around 6pm. They would then wake up a few hours later for a bit of quiet thinking time, or a potter about and then have another kip until it got light again. Elsewhere in the world Spanish-style siestas are pretty common. The animal kingdom is also pretty diverse when it comes to sleep: a python apparently likes to snooze for 18 hours a day, while a giraffe is
happy with 1.9 hours.
